La Plaza de Oriente
This beautiful square is located in the historic center of Madrid, framed by two of the most important buildings in the city; the Royal Palace and the Royal Theater. It has different gardens with an exhibition of sculptures, which especially highlights that of Philip IV, work of Pietro Tacca of the seventeenth century. Designed in 1844 by the architect Narciso Pascual and Colomer, the square was built under the orders of King José I after the demolition of the medieval houses that were in the area.It is a rectangular square with a curved head, monumental character, whose final layout responds to an 1844 design by Narciso Pascual and Colomer, heir to several previous projects. One of its main drivers was King Jose I, who ordered the demolition of medieval houses located on his site.
The construction of the Royal Palace began in 1738 and the works lasted for seventeen years. Shortly after its completion, in 1764, Carlos III established his habitual residence there. The location of the palace was the same that occupied the Palace of the Habsburgs, destroyed by a fire on Christmas Eve of 1734. The Royal Palace is surrounded by the gardens of Campo del Moro and the Sabatini gardens, former stables. The first, to the west, date from the Middle Ages; the latter were created in the twentieth century and are in the north. The Campo del Moro can be visited during the day. Royal Palace of Madrid is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family, but currently the palace is used exclusively for receptions, ceremonies and official events since the kings of Spain reside in the Palacio de la Zarzuela.
The Solemn change of the Royal Guard takes place every first Wednesday of each month at noon except the months of July, August and September and those days in which an official act is held or weather conditions prevent it).
